“and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” - Isaiah 9:6, NRSV

Health issues are inevitable in this life. They are a part of this world we live in.

I was diagnosed with Lyme disease over a year ago, and I see a doctor who specializes in treating it. My twin brother was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 3, and he saw countless specialists throughout his short 28 years. While a treatment for my health issue has been found, treatments for my brother’s epilepsy ultimately failed.

However, even though earthly treatments for my brother’s epilepsy failed, God’s spiritual medicine prevailed.

God is our divine specialist. He is an expert on us, because He made us. The Creator knows the created.

Isaiah 9:6 tells us that God is our “Wonderful Counselor”. We can turn to Him at any time for spiritual consolation. And sometimes, God does indeed heal. In the gospels, Jesus healed many who had been failed by physicians of the time. The Pharisees even criticized Jesus for his association with the sick and lowest members of society, but Jesus said in Luke 5:31, “. . . ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician’. . .”.

But, when God does not heal us, He is still our divine specialist. He knows our pain intimately. He knows every little thing we are going through. And He cares.

When earthly medicine fails, let us be reminded that God’s divine medicine prevails.

Healing doesn’t always come to us earth side, but it is promised to us in heaven.
